Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel to Whittier

Fifty miles southeast of Anchorage, off the Seward Highway, and near Portage Glacier, a tunnel connects the port city of Whittier on Prince William Sound to the Seward Highway and South Central Alaska. Built during WWII, this tunnel is open for vehicles and trains alike. This tunnel is a narrow, one lane passage through the mountain. Open to the public May 1st, traffic enters every 30 minutes. During the summer, traffic starts at 5:30 a.m., continuing until 11:15 p.m., accommodating vehicles most of the time. Unscheduled trains using the tunnel in addition to the regularly scheduled passenger trains may cause occasional 15 to 30 minute delays. Plan your trip with this possibility in mind.
