Twenty-Mile River and the Tidal Flats

Located just before the Portage Glacier turn off. This area is unique in that you will drive past an abandoned home site, and car, that are slowly decaying in the flats. First abandoned after the Earth Quake of 1964, in which the land “dropped,” or sunk 8 feet, so that it became inhabitable. The town site of Girdwood was once here, but was relocated after it was flooded during the Earth Quake.
