Alaska Sunset Cabins

Alaska Sunset Cabin Location

Where in Alaska are your cabins located?  We are located on the Kenai Peninsula. The peninsula is south of Anchorage when you are looking at a map. We are in the town of Kasilof , Alaska.  Kasilof is a short drive from Kenai (about 12 minutes) and Soldotna (about 17 minutes). When you are looking at a map you will notice that we are between the Kenai River and Kasilof River. Both rivers have fishing access. The cabins themselves sit nestled in the trees on the bluff. The bluff is about 30 feet in the air, giving the cabins a bird’s eye view of commercial fishing. The cabins also overlook Cook Inlet and sit directly across the inlet from the Alaska Range. On a clear day you can see Mt. Augustine (4,134 ft elevation), Mt. Iliamna (10,016 ft elevation), and Mt. Redoubt (10,197 ft elevation).

How long does it take to drive from the Anchorage International Airport to your cabins? That will depend on how much wild life you stop to see, how much coffee you drink and the traffic. It typically takes 3 hours from start to finish.

What do you furnish in the cabins?  We provide towels and linens for the bedroom and bathroom. In the kitchen we provide eating and cooking utensils, pans, pots, cups, plates and bowls. We cover what we think are the basics. Anything else you may need can be picked up at a local store in Kenai or Soldotna.

What time can we check in? What time do we have to check out?  Our cabins are ready for guest to check in by 3 PM. Guest must be checked out by 11:00 AM.

Is there any shopping near by if I need to get extra supplies or groceries?  In Kasilof there is a mercantile (8 minute drive). They sell food and basic supplies. Remember you are only 12 minutes from the City of Kenai and 17 minutes from the City of Soldotna and both have large grocery stores, restaurants and businesses.

Are you open year round?  Currently our cabins are open from May 20th thru September 15th. We are planning to winterize and make available the Denali Cabin and the Foraker Cabin for year round use.

Can I fish for salmon from your property?  Even though salmon fill the waters in front of our cabins you can not sport fish for them. The area in front of our cabins and to our left and right is designated as a commercial area only. You can drive 7 minutes to the Kasilof River or drive 17 minutes to the Kenai River and sport fish. If you would like to see the Alaska Fish & Game regulations you can click here.

Is there a guide that you recommend for sport fishing?  There are literally hundreds of guides to choose from. I will narrow it down to two guides and make it easy for you. If you are looking for professional (no drinking or swearing) guides who know the rivers and fish then call:

What is the weather like in Alaska and what type of clothing should I bring?  I generally recommend that guest bring layers of clothing to wear. In a day it can be cold, hot, windy sunny and rainy. Wearing layers will allow you to adjust as the day progresses.

What is there to do around the cabins?  You can walk down to the beach and enjoy watching commercial fishermen in action. Have a bon fire on the beach. Walk on the beach. During the salmon season you can watch commercial fishermen from your cabin.

If I catch a lot of fish how do I get it home?  There is a local fish processor right 8 miles down the road who can, package and ship the fish for you. We generally try to encourage our guest to take as much as they can on the airplane. It is the cheapest way to bring your fish back. While you are staying with us we do have freezer space for you to store your finsihed product.

When is the commercial fishing season?  The salmon season last about 6 weeks. We start fishing around June 20th and go till August 11th. The commercial season is regulated by Fish & Game so the dates can change from year to year.
