Portage Glacier Visitor CenterPortage Glacier is 50 minutes south of Anchorage. It is built on the remnants of a terminal moraine left by Portage Glacier, the Portage Glacier Visitor Center is on the way to the Anderson Memorial Tunnel, which is the only entrance into the port of Whittier. The visitor center has a theatre, showing "Voices from the Ice" every 20 minutes which gives a spectacular view of many glaciers and wildlife. Cost to view this film is $1.The visitor center has many exhibits offering insights into glaciers and early Alaskans. It also has a tremendous viewing room with floor to ceiling windows. The view is amazing, as the visitor center is built in a valley surrounded by snow capped mountains. Due to its retreat, the face of the glacier is still partially in Portage Lake, but can only bee seen from a distance. Depending on your visit, you can see ice bergs which have floated right up to the parking lot. The wind in this area is strong, so bring a jacket.
