Alaska Sunset Cabins

Visit Alaska - Things To Do

The drive from Anchorage to the Kenai Peninsula

South of Anchorage extending to the Kenai Peninsula, you will drive the one and only, scenic Seward Highway. From Anchorage to Portage Glacier it is about 60 minutes, however with so many picture opportunities, you will need to plan for extra time. Mountain Goats frequent this drive; hanging off the cliffs that flank the Seward Hwy. Opposite the cliffs is the Glacier fed, Turnagain Arm, which flows into Cook Inlet. In mid-summer, Beluga whales and wind surfers gather. Water falls pour out of the rocks along the way, and off in the distance you will see several receding glaciers. The Turnagain Arm has tidal fluctuations of about 44 feet. This exposes the mudflats along the coast from Anchorage to Portage. They may look nice to walk on, but they are quicksand-like, and are extremely dangerous. Past the Portage Glacier turn off, drive over Turnagain Pass through the mountains, and on to the sister cities of Kenai and Soldotna. With out many stops, the drive to Alaska Sunset Cabins is about 3 hours, of the most beautiful country you will see in Alaska.
